Clik here to view.ADAM Cockie, a former West Coast rookie, is burning up the training track at St Kilda and may well find himself on a clubs’ rookie list next week.
So often, players who have been delisted from AFL clubs and return to state leagues, are destined to dominate. Cockie was one of those who flocked from the WAFL to the VFL mainly because he was told the smaller ground of Trevor Barker Beach Oval for Sandringham would be of an advantage to him.
He has worked hard as an inside and outside midfielder and has plenty of strength and endurance to pit him as a ready made AFL player.
While he is training at the Saints, there are three other clubs that have glimpses of interest in Cockie, who may well prove to be another Ed Curnow-like story. A rookie who wasn’t given many opportunities and cut prematurely off a list out to prove a team wrong.
Unfortunately for Cockie, however, the rookie lists of clubs have been cut this season and his opportunities will be limited.
Cockie’s season in 2012 was one that started off with a bang with him dominating a pre-season practice match. His 30 plus disposals showed that he was one of the VFL’s top recruits. On several occasions throughout the season Cockie was tested with tagging jobs as well as being tagged. He shows plenty of finesse and vigour which is why the Saints have been keeping a good eye on him. But the Saints would need to delist more of its rookies if they are to fit him on their list.
Zebras coach Simon McPhee is also an unabashed fan of him.
